Kidney Stones-Urology
|
Kidney stones are stones formed from chemicals in urine.Chemicals in excess that are not flushed out of the system through urine get collected in the kidney. They form crystals and harden into stones and get deposited in different places in the urinary tract. The urinary tract includes kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. Stones formed in the urinary tract cause severe pain when they block the passage of urine.

If kidney stones do not block passage of urine then they may be passed through urine spontaneously or through certain non surgical methods.Based on the chemical composition there are four main types of kidney stones.
Kidney stones vary in size depending on the amount of chemical compounds deposited. Size of a kidney stone can range anywhere from less than a millimeter to about an inch or more. Small stones usually do not show any symptoms unless caused by an infection. Kidney stones about the size of 4-5 millimeter can pass through urine spontaneously. Whereas, stones the size of 6 mm and more cause severe pain and cannot pass through urine.

Over 20 million Americans suffer from a disease that is preventable and naturally curable in most cases? Though to the medical industry's benefit, most people do not know how simple it is to prevent and even dissolve kidney stones. And unfortunately, these people suffer from pain and aching in the back; sudden spasms; abdominal pain; groin pain; bloody urine; fatigue; fever and chills.
The treatment of kidney stones may vary depending on the size of the stones and condition of the patient.
Drinking lots of water and making a few dietary changes can reduce chances of kidney stone formation. Sometimes water and dietary control may not enough to reduce formation of kidney stones.Medications may be necessary to reduce the level of certain chemicals like calcium, uric acid, oxalate or cystine. Medicines may also be prescribed to relieve pain associated with movement and presence of big stones.
The treatment generally aims at relieving the patient of pain, passing kidney stones through urine or removing them surgically. The surgery may be invasive or non-invasive, depending on the position and size of the kidney stones.
